Third Try

Third Try
1/20/17
Hey! Long time no see!

In the past year, I have learned and blogged two ways of making easy level paper-cutting patterns. I am going to begin this year’s blogs by beginning a new level, medium.

By calling Medium Level, it doesn’t mean that the patterns are going to be hard to make. Instead, the products will not only be simple symmetry patterns, they are going to be animals or something more interesting.

Today, I made a cute butterfly. Here’s a random fact that today is the Chinese lunar year according to Chinese calendar. So hopefully the butterfly can bring good luck to the new year. I began the first step by cutting out a rectangle, which is the same size as two squares (about 15cm*30cm). Then, I drew the outline of the butterfly. An important tip here- do not draw the butterfly too small and save too little space for the edges. It exactly looks better with a bigger size and a thicker edge! Finally, I used the regular scissors to cut out the parts that I don’t want based on the outline (the white parts on the picture on the left).

Yeah, a cute butterfly is done! Isn’t it pretty but cute! Try to make one if you are interested. It is not that hard and I believe that you can do it!

"How might your Genius Hour project help you stand out to colleges and help shape your life plan?"

For our Genius Hour project, I chose to learn about making Chinese Paper-cuttings by using different types of color-paper and craft knifes to make beautiful patterns. I took pictures or videos while doing them and updated my blog every week with these pictures, videos and the descriptions I wrote for this pattern. My blog is not only for the people who love Chinese tradition culture and are interested in making Chinese paper-cuttings, but also for everyone who is open to learn and experience more Chinese culture. As an international student from China, I would like to introduce to people in other countries more about our traditional Chinese culture. Chinese paper-cuttings are really traditional, interesting, and cool things to do and I really enjoy doing them.

I believe that my project helps me stand out to colleges because I can bring the most traditional first sources from Chinese culture to people all around the world. While having cultural diffusion in United States, I would like to try my best to add more into it. Cultural exchange helps people in different parts of the world know more about other countries. After finishing this project, I will still learn more interesting things about Chinese culture in my free time and spread them to people around me and people who are interested in to help them experience different culture. And also, I will be more open to experience more about other cultures at the same time.
